Standardized test scores are an optional part of the application to Choate. If you choose to submit test scores with your application, please see below for testing options based on the grade to which you are applying.
9th grade applicants: Submit SSAT or ISEE scores taken on or after June.
10th and 11th grade applicants: Submit SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT or ACT scores taken on or after last June.
Postgraduate applicants: Submit PSAT, SAT or ACT scores taken on or after June from two years ago.
English Proficiency Tests: Non-native English speakers and/or students who have not been at a school where English is the primary language of instruction for at least two years are strongly encouraged to submit results from a TOEFL, Duolingo, or IELTS test taken on or after June.
Standardized testing for our admission process depends on the grade to which you are applying.

How to send
Official scores should be sent directly from the testing agencies whenever possible. In lieu of sending official score reports for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests, a school counselor may submit verified test scores on behalf of the applicant.

To initiate a Choate application, register with Gateway to Prep Schools, complete the Candidate Profile, and submit it to Choate.
Complete Part 2 of the Gateway to Prep Schools application for Choate Rosemary Hall. This consists of Applicant Essays and a Parent/Guardian Statement.
Through Gateway to Prep Schools, request that a school official complete the Principal/Counselor Recommendation as well as the Transcript Report. Your transcript should include your current grades alongside your academic record from the last 2 years. Applicants who are currently in grades 9-12, we ask that your counselor submits the high school profile sheet (if available) with your current grades and transcript(s).
Request recommendations from your current* English and mathematics teachers through Gateway to Prep Schools.
*Postgraduate applicants may submit teacher recommendations from either a current or previous year teacher. If you are a 9th-11th grade applicant and are unable to submit recommendations from your current teachers, please contact us at admission@choate.edu.
The Third Teacher Recommendation is optional and may be completed by a current or previous year teacher.
The Personal Recommendation is optional and may be completed by an adult who knows you well and can speak to your character.
Request either or both of these optional recommendations through Gateway to Prep Schools.
For students who are applying for financial aid, please complete the Financial Aid Application by January 15.
Beginning in the fall, applicants will receive notice via email that their Choate Application Status Portal is available. Use your Choate Application Status Portal to monitor your application checklist and upload any supplementary documents. You can also use the portal to access additional applicant resources, including admission event registration forms. Ultimately, you will receive your admission decision on this portal.
The Admission Committee gives full consideration to all completed applications that arrive by the deadline.
Admission NotificationAdmission decisions will be available online. Late applicants will receive due consideration.
Admission Reply DateAdmitted students are asked to notify the Admission Office of their enrollment decision.
